What we collect, and why.
We collect the minimum needed to run the marketplace: accounts, addresses, orders, and payments. We never sell your data.
What we collect
- Account: your name and email address, via Google sign-in.
- Addresses: shipping addresses you provide, used to create shipping labels.
- Orders and payments: what you bought or swapped, and payment confirmations. Card numbers are processed by Stripe — we never see or store them.
- Reading history: only if you choose to upload a Goodreads export, used to warn you about books you already own.
- Private notes: pass-on notes and listing details you write.
- Basic logs: standard server logs for security and debugging.
Why we collect it
To run your orders and swaps, ship books, take payment, prevent fraud, and keep the site working. We don’t use your data for advertising, and we don’t sell it to anyone.
Who sees it
- Stripe processes payments.
- EasyPost creates shipping labels from addresses.
- PostHog receives server-side analytics events tied to your account id — never your name, email, or address.
- Swap partners see the shipping address needed to mail your book — nothing more.
That’s the whole list. No data brokers, no ad networks.
How long we keep it
Account and order data is kept while your account is active. Order records we’re required to keep for taxes and the law are retained as required. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data except what the law requires us to keep.
Testimonials
After delivery, we may ask you for short feedback about the experience. Only if you explicitly opt in can your quote be displayed publicly, with the name or handle you gave, and only quotes we choose to feature appear. Without that opt-in, your feedback is never quoted publicly.
The emails we send are about your account and your orders: confirmations, shipping and delivery updates, claims, and account notices. You can’t opt out of those — they are part of fulfilling your orders. We don’t currently send promotional or marketing emails.
Cookies
We set a sign-in cookie to keep you signed in. We don’t use advertising cookies, and we don’t sell your data to anyone. Analytics runs on our servers, not in your browser: it records which pages you visit and actions you take, tied to your account id, never your name, email, or address — and it sets no cookie.
Children’s privacy
You must be 18 or older to use Second Date Books. The site isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has given us personal data, email hello@seconddatebooks.com and we’ll delete it.
Your choices
Don’t upload a Goodreads export if you’d rather we not see your reading history — the warning is optional. To review, correct, or delete your data, email hello@seconddatebooks.com.
